By the end, you can

By the end of this course, you will be able to run a trading-partner programme on Anypoint Partner Manager — onboarded partner profiles, X12 message flows, reconciled acknowledgements and a replay runbook — so that every B2B document has a traceable owner, status and remedy.

Running case study

Havenmark Distribution moves grocery and household stock for 260 retail chains across 9 countries, exchanging roughly 38,000 X12 documents a day — 850, 855, 856, 810 — through a 14-year-old VAN broker whose mappings nobody left in the building can read. Technical onboarding of a new trading partner takes 6 weeks, 4.1 % of inbound interchanges die on envelope errors that surface only when retailer chargebacks arrive, and 997s go unreconciled for days. Targets: partner onboarding under 5 days, unacknowledged-interchange backlog cleared inside 24 hours, failed-document replay in under 15 minutes.

Programme every line is something you do

5 modules · 15 topics · in course-flow order

  1. Module 1

    Trading partners, not file drops

Objective. Diagnose Havenmark's B2B estate and produce a technical onboarding blueprint one partner can be cut over against.

    • Model the Partner Manager object graph — partner profile, identifiers, endpoints, message flows — for 3 partners covering AS2, SFTP and HTTPS transports
    • Register interchange identifiers (ISA05/ISA06 qualifier pairs, GS02/GS03 application codes) so routing resolves on the ISA plus message type combination, not on filename conventions
    • Cut technical onboarding from 6 weeks to under 5 days with a reusable partner template and a go-live checklist signed by the partner
  2. Module 2

Transaction sets that carry the order

Objective. Design the document-type catalogue for the order-to-cash cycle and bind each transaction set to a backend contract.

    • Walk the order-to-cash chain — 850 purchase order, 855 acknowledgement, 856 advance ship notice, 810 invoice — naming the system of record that owns each hop
    • Pair each X12 set with its EDIFACT equivalent (ORDERS, ORDRSP, DESADV, INVOIC) for the 3 European chains that will not trade X12
    • Pin a schema version per partner — 005010 as the house baseline, 004010 for 40 legacy partners — and record every deviation on the partner profile
  3. Module 3

    Message flows, end to end

Objective. Construct inbound and outbound message flows that translate partner documents into backend contracts, proven hop by hop on live endpoints.

    • Build the inbound flow: Receive from Partners endpoint → X12 850 → DataWeave translation map → Target at Host, validating each of the 4 stages before deployment
    • Build the outbound mirror: Source at Host (JSON) → map → X12 810 → Send to Partners over AS2, keeping interchanges under the X12 EDI Connector 2.19 ceiling of 15 MB per file
    • Budget runtime memory against the connector's ~40:1 file-to-RAM ratio — a 12 MB interchange claims roughly 480 MB — and split oversized batches before production does it for you
  4. Module 4

    Acknowledgements you actually reconcile

Objective. Evaluate acknowledgement settings across the estate and deliver a reconciliation view that ages every unacknowledged interchange.

    • Set Expect functional acknowledgement (X12 997) or Expect CONTRL functional acknowledgement (EDIFACT) per flow, with Mark overdue after tuned to the SLA — 24 hours by default, 4 hours for the 12 tier-1 chains
    • Arbitrate 997 versus 999 versus TA1 per partner: acknowledge every transaction with AK2/AK5, or report only errors at AK3/IK3 and keep the return payload small
    • Drive the unacknowledged backlog to zero within 24 hours by ageing transmissions on Acknowledgment status = Overdue and assigning each one an owner
  5. Module 5

    Failed interchanges, triaged and replayed

Objective. Arbitrate validation strictness against partner reality and produce the triage-and-replay runbook operations will be paged with.

    • Tune enforcement — length limits, segment order, segment repeats, code sets, conditional rules — deciding per partner what fails hard and what merely logs (target: envelope rejects from 4.1 % to under 0.5 %)
    • Reject replayed duplicates on ISA13, GS06 and ST02 uniqueness, sizing the control-number store against its 30-day default time-to-live and your audit retention
    • Triage in Tracking by partner, direction, processing status and replay status, then replay a failed transmission and prove the Original Transmission Id still links back — under 15 minutes end to end
