MuleSoft Composer for Business Teams (Course #composer-business)
For business analysts, operations managers, Salesforce administrators, citizen integrators.
By the end, you can
By the end of this course, you will be able to build, test and operate MuleSoft Composer flows without writing code — authenticated connections, mapped and formula-driven fields, error handlers and a governed flow register — so that business teams clear their own backlog without going around IT.
Running case study
Ashvale Instruments sells laboratory equipment in 9 countries across five SaaS systems — Salesforce, NetSuite, Workday, Jira Service Management, Slack — plus two homegrown apps, none of them connected. RevOps, finance and support re-key roughly 14,000 records a month at a 4 % error rate, while IT's integration backlog holds 40 requests at a 7-month average wait. The business is told to automate its own top ten. Targets: closed-won in Salesforce to a NetSuite sales order in under 15 minutes instead of 3 business days, re-keying error rate under 0.5 %, and zero flows auto-deactivated — Composer disables a flow after 100 consecutive errors across 10 days.

-
Module 1
Where Composer Stops and IT Starts
Objective. Diagnose which of Ashvale's automation requests belong in MuleSoft Composer and deliver a triage rubric IT will sign.
- Triage IT's 40-request integration backlog through a 5-test rubric — record volume, transformation depth, compliance scope — routing each request to Composer or to the API estate
- Position MuleSoft Composer against MuleSoft RPA and IT-built system APIs on who owns the credentials, the error budget and the change window
- Baseline the manual process before automating it: 14,000 re-keyed records a month at a 4 % error rate is the number every flow is measured against
-
Module 2
Connections You Do Not Own
Objective. Design Ashvale's connection inventory — one owner, one service account and one rotation date per entry — and mark the systems Composer cannot reach.
- Create one named connection per system with its service account, scope and rotation date recorded — target 100 % service accounts, zero personal logins
- Map Ashvale's 7 systems onto their Composer connectors and flag the 2 homegrown apps as API-estate work for IT rather than shadow automation
- Read the Composer Connector Reference before building: which triggers and actions a connector exposes, and which fields each one demands
-
Module 3
Pick the Clock or the Event
Objective. Evaluate record-trigger, scheduler and invocable-flow starting points per process and select one with its latency and API-call cost stated.
- Choose between a record trigger polling at 15-second granularity and a scheduler running anywhere from 15 minutes to 30 days, pricing each in consumed API calls
- Expose a flow as an invocable flow called from Salesforce Flow Builder, an Apex callout or a cURL command, and name who is entitled to call it
- Hold the quote-to-cash target: closed-won in Salesforce to a NetSuite sales order in under 15 minutes, down from 3 business days
-
Module 4
Map Fields, Then Prove It
Objective. Construct the Salesforce-to-NetSuite order flow with data pills, Picklist Mapping and formulas, and prove it on a test record before activation.
- Bind fields with data pills and reusable Picklist Mapping so Ashvale's 9 country codes and 4 currencies align across applications
- Build string, math and nested functions in the Custom Expression Editor, then branch an If/Else Block across the 3 order types
- Test each trigger and action on a single record before activating, then replay 50 records and hold first-run defects under 0.5 %
-
Module 5
Run History Is Your Evidence
Objective. Prove every activated flow is observable and governed — On Error routes, a Run History triage cadence and a permission split agreed with IT.
- Wire the Watch and On Error sections so a failed step raises a Slack alert instead of leaving a silent gap in NetSuite
- Work Run History inside its limits — 1000 records per flow, 2 weeks of retention — with a weekly triage slot so no error ages out unread
- Split Builder and Administrator permissions across the 3 business teams and hand IT a monthly register of active flows, owners and connections
